Inline links are words we hyperlink/hotlink to offsite web pages that correspond to the content being hyperlinked and enhance the value of the story to the reader.
Inline links are forward paths in a way because they’re actions we want readers to take or actions that would add value to the enjoyment the reader gets out of the page content. However, that’s not all they do for us, they also increase Search Engine Optimization (SEO), which in turn, could increase our Search Engine Results Page (SERP) ranking.
Inline links are most valuable when:
The URL used ends in .edu, .org, or .gov - pretty much anything affiliated with a non-profit
The words linked are associated with keywords in the story and/or something people may be searching for and the story would add value to their search
They open in a new tab so it doesn’t fully disrupt the read of the article
