Incorporation of keywords associated with your story or web page content can help users find your site more easily and help you get your message across. In addition to using keywords to boost search engine optimization (SEO), keywords are also critical when creating YouTube channels, YouTube ads and pay per click (PPC) and display ads.
Brainstorm all known related keywords based on your knowledge
Find related searches
Go to Google Trends
Input Research Thrust
Look at “Related Topics” widget and add relevant keywords/phrases to list
You can then re-perform this methodology with the related topics results, however, please be careful of keyword rabbit holes where you may stray too far away from the original research thrust
Add competitor keywords
Run ScreamingFrog on all known competitors in that field
Copy metadata column and paste into word cloud tool
Earmark any relevant recurring keywords and add to list
Repeat for other competitors
Find longtail keywords
Search for research thrust on Google
Scroll to bottom of page
Phrases under “Searches related to data & computing” at the bottom of the page are the longtailed keywords associated with these terms
Find our keywords/areas of expertise
On News Center
Go to news center
Click on associated research category
Skim headlines and story content for relevant buzzwords
On Research Group/Lab Sites
Find associated faculty on News Center stories
Review their profiles for links to their labs
Skim for relevant buzzwords
Search for term on website
Look at left column on search results page to view related search terms
Add relevant search terms to list
Find term on site page in results column
Navigate to page
Look for associated keywords on page that mentions research thrust
Refine keywords (for more information on how to do this, please take the Google Adwords exam)
Log in to Google Adwords
Go to keyword tool
Enter list of keywords and remove those that do not return favorable results
