 Spring 2025     Poetry

I Know Icarus

Hadlee Bingham

I know Icarus

I’ve only ever been--

Pushed,

Shoved,

Thrust,

From moving airplanes into the sky we call love.

Free falling. Waiting to hit the ground--

Hard,

Violently,

Fatally,

The end has only ever meant destruction.

I met you, and now I know Icarus--

Graceful,

Beautiful,

Poetic,

If a plummet into the sea could ever be called such, this would be it.

You have me falling--

Slowly,

Safely,

Carefully,

Like I’ve never fallen before.

I fell up. Into the stars with--

Artemis,

Virgo,

Andromeda,

Giving their souls for love that didn’t come true until the stars held them in love’s embrace.

Da Vinci’s wings would have worked had he known you--

Gliding,

Floating,

Gravitating,

Towards the ground without fear of breaking.
