Are you ready to go to New South Wales forests to meet this furry mammal called the koala?
Okay… ready set go !
Physical Characteristics
A koala is a special type of mammal called a marsupial. Did you know a koala is nocturnal and can sleep for about 18 - 20 hours a day!The koala’s scientific name is Phascolarctos Cinereus which means { ash grey pouched bear }. A koala can grow up to be about 2 feet tall and about 2-2.8ft long. Did you know koalas can keep clean by using a grooming claw. Koalas can grow up to be about 18 - 20 pounds. Did you know koalas have two front thumbs on their front claws. A koala's food is actually toxic so it can kill other animals. A koala can really only have two or three babies while others can have much more. Also a koala baby eats it’s mother's pap so it can get ready for the poisonous eucalyptus leaves. The color of it’s fur is mostly grey but there is some white spots on their ears and stomach.
Habitat
Their habitats are mostly eucalyptus trees, Forests, coastal islands, and low woodlands . Did you know even though they live in spaces with different trees it sometimes refuses to eat other leaves. Koalas are mostly found in South Australia, North Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland. There shelter is mostly trees. There climate is forest areas where the temperature is about 60-80 degrees.
Diet
Koalas mostly eat eucalyptus trees but if they have to though they'll eat wood,mistletoe, and box leaves. Koalas will eat about 1 pound a day. can you imagine they're probably pretty heavy animals! They mostly live in eucalyptus trees so it’s pretty easy to
Predatorsget food and koalas are nocturnal so most of their predators are asleep so it makes it safe to out for food.
Their main predators are dogs, goannas, dingoes, wedge tailed eagles, powerful owls, pythons, and sadly humans.
Young
Koalas give birth to their young alive. Did you you know a baby koala is called a cub or a joey. The young are very tiny when they're born, they have no fur, undeveloped ears, and most joeys are blind. Did you know they can be as big as a jelly bean when they're born. The young mostly eat their mother's milk but around 22 weeks the young's mother will push them to eat eucalyptus leaves.
Related species
There related species are the wombat, and the kangaroo.
Conclusion
Koalas are endangered. Australian laws protect koalas but all states are responsible for koalas conservation. A koala adaptations for living in trees the have sharp claws for climbing and pouches to hold babies who can't walk.
