The Field Studies Continue....
We were at the Red Bridge area on Saturday 3/22/2014 from 8 AM to 12:00.
We did water testing for dissolved solids, pH and conductivity using a LaMotte probe and a pH meter with pH paper. We also did a GPS location of the site. Fishing was allowed on the permit and several students tried fishing for the first time. We did a nature walk and saw a Mallard duck pair, turkey vultures and a muskrat.
The high-light was the first underwater video , taken with our new GoPro video camera. Here it is...
Students helped one another review some fishing techniques and learned about fly fishing. We also talked about the concept of "catch and release" for trout fishing. Opening day of trout season is the next weekend.
The students also did water testing and operated the GoPro camera for the underwater videos.
Fishing in the Tully...We discussed entomology for selecting lures based on the current stonefly hatch and the other foods that fish eat in the food chain. For some students it was the first time fishing...not these guys , though!
Students testing the conductivity , pH and dissolved solids found that the "Tully" is very clean and a great habitat for trout and native fish.
