Bacteria Inquiry
E.coli
Are bacteria "BAD"? You will investigate this in some detail. You will be viewing bacteria under high power on the digital microscopes and using oil immersion to view them in the highest power possible with LM; 1000x.
Part A : Three Types of Bacteria: View bacteria on the microscope
1. Identify a sample of each type of bacteria: Round, Rod, Spiral on a slide.
a. Do a sketch of each type of bacteria ,with labels done in high power.( magnification, name, other)
( Three total sketches, one for each type of bacteria.) List magnification, Type of organism - genus species if available, any features which are identifiable. ON PAPER
b. Take one digital image of each type of basic bacteria types in high power. Take a measurements in micrometers an label the image. Put the digital image into a Google Drawing and label basic structures; Type, cell wall, Measurement and magnification in a Google Doc with your name.
Submit the remainder of the Lab Report on Google Classroom with all on one document WITH PART B.
Part B: Good or Bad?
READ all of the directions first: The part B Report will be typed, images are going to be submitted on a Google Document on Google Classroom.
1. View ALL of the following pathological bacteria species in high power.
Make observations and record them for your lab report.
For example, is it a rod shaped bacterium, are they Gram positive?
You should view a sample each of the following :
VIEW ALL SIX under a regular microscope or Digital . You may be asked to identify these on a quiz. Also, you will take a closer look at three of them for part 2. Read part 2.
Note : Are the species Gram positive and Gram negative?
( Note the species which react with the Gram stain = violet)
1. Salmonella typhi
2. Staphylococcus aureus
3. Clostidium botulinum
4. Neisseria meningitidis ( Meningococcus)
5. Escherichia coli
6. Clostridium tetani
2. Digital Image collection : Take a digital image of the three of the disease causing bacteria species from part B1.above in high power. ( Each student should do their own image). Note the magnification, include labels and take a measurement of the length or diameter of the bacterium.
3. Web Research : Research any three species of your choice and get a paragraph on each. This may be
"copy /pasted" from web sources like a mini-research paper. Credit sources in an informal way at least. You may use MLA or APA documentation if you prefer. What symptoms does it cause?
4. What are some things that bacteria do that are "good"?
Research and to later discuss in one paragraph Total on : " What are some things that bacteria do that are "good"? "( Not the individual topics, but all six or so, into one answer to the question.)
You may find some additional ideas that can be added.
This can be done on a Google Document. Images should be included. (Diagrams, photos, etc.) Submitted on Classroom.
Here are some ideas to investigate about good bacteria :
1. Nitrogen fixing bacteria; the nitrogen cycle.
2. Decomposers
3. The nuclei of rain drops
4. Human digestion
5. Digestion of cellulose in cows
6. OTHER things that you come across.
