Meeting 21: 3 April 2019

Meeting Minutes

Date: 3 April 2019; 1030 – 1200 CT; IODP A105

Attendees: Don Simms, Leah LeVay, Carlos Alvarez Zarikian, Brian LeVay, Phil Gates, Denise Kulhanek, Amy McWilliams, Tim Blaisdell, Brad Julson, Tobias Hoefig, David Houpt, Sandra Herrmann

Updates:

1) Microbiology workshop paper (Jason/Laurel)

A preliminary draft has now been shared with the JRSO. The document is still under revision by the Microbiology group prior to submission as a technical note.

Recommendation: Apply knowledge of Emily Estes when she starts in June 2019.

2) SEM EDS testing status (Tobias)

Tests were performed on three different instruments: Oxford (AZtecOne), Bruker (Quantax), Nanoscience (Phenom XL). A summary table is included in the presentation (available soon on the LWG website).

Reviewers recommend the Bruker system.

Recommendation: This does not meet any of our primary needs (ex. - drilling decisions, safety), but the shipboard needs are similar to the pXRF and meets a science/community desire. Sandra will investigate further the community need for this attachment.

3) HF methods and alternatives (Laurel/Sandra)

The approved recommendations to management were summarized and are attached here.

- Some non-HF methods were used on Expedition 379; further information will be available as the preliminary report is prepared.

- The heading of the ship seems to be less critical with lower volumes of HF (new protocol), but this should be tested further. Sea state it more critical than wind direction.

New Items:

5) Tracer Pump Camera (Sandra)

The technicians have requested the installation of a monitoring system for the tracer pump system. Details are included in the preliminary proposal attached here.

Recommendation: This would be a very useful system. Sandra will pursue this.

6) pXRF Data Reporting

The pXRF report displayed ‘ppm’ in the header with each element, however the data can be exported in ppm or percentage.

Recommendation: Remove the units from LORE reports and clarify which units are used within publications (Preliminary Report, Proceedings Volume).

Jeff Ryan has also provided a link to an online pXRF calibration protocol:

7) Surplus Items (Dionex IC, HP GC, Rigaku N2 generator)

The GC-MS can be sent to surplus. Future staff scientists Emily Estes requests that we keep the Dionex IC.

8) Expedition Reviews/Evaluations: 376, 368X

Expedition 376 – Brothers Arc

1) It would be interesting to have a little sequencer onboard, such as a MinION, which could provide direct DNA sequencing data.

Recommendation: Does not meet the requirements for basic shipboard measurements.

Expedition 368X –Return to Hole U1503A

No geochemistry/microbiology comments.
