Lab Working Group – Geochemistry and Microbiology Meeting Minutes

Date: Nov 6, 2013

Attendees: Peng, Julson, Bogus, Gray, Morgan, Houpt, Peters, Brandt, Hodge, Fackler, Alvarez-Zarikian

1. EXP346 Evaluation (Murray)

Not easy to analyze single sample on the fly on most instruments

a. We can analyze a single sample as it comes. However, this takes organization among the scientists before receiving the sample and requires a dedicated operator for the instrument. The comment might be relevant on an individual cruise basis – as it is dependent on the core recovery as well.

No action required

2. Review of EXP346 by Lisa Brandt

a. Chem layout changes – reversed GC position – is working well

b. The chemlab can use one more Zebra printer in lab – near GCs – Hodge is checking

ACTION: MCS and chemtechs will work together during “kick the tires” to install a second Zebra printer

3. Sample creation protocol from Sample Master to Chemlab

To allow the analysis of samples without waiting for the curator

a. Normally, this is not an issue.

No action required

4. SRA is back for a service call

The vendor rep will be here on Monday, Nov 11; The instrument needs to go back via air freight mid- to end of December

5. Technical Documentation updates (software, methods, etc.)

a. Rachael on GC, Erik on TOC

b. SRA documents were reviewed 08.2013

c. Coloumeter – screen captures need to be updated and sent to Lori

6. Organic geochemist/microbio on Exp. 349

a. Chieh working with Denise – stable isotope work needs to take place in the Rad Van to prevent contamination

b. We have received a quote for custom made PFT gas standards. David and Brad will evaluate the cost efficiency.

7. New Instrument Update

a. GCs: one is in the current shipment to Subic Bay, the second one is going via second surface freight

b. Carver press motorpak: 3 ea. sent to Subic Bay in 349P/52882

8. Update from last meeting action items: no progress on any developer requests – Morgan and Fackler will check on these items

a. C1/C2 ratio

ACTION: Gas Analysis Report (GAR) needs to be restored onboard. There is no need to store C1/C2 ratio in LIMS

b. Uploader issues ACTION items

i. CHNS, SRA, XRD: add a feature to the worklist to enable canceling samples that are not going to be run

ii.Coulometer: The save dialog window needs to allow the user to switch between the coulometer and weighing program as a routine operation. Autosaving the result file to a local drive is a necessity.

iii.Chlorinity: There is a suggestion that the dialog should be prominently attached to the main chlorinity window. No front panel activity should be allowed until the result is acknowledged. However, the save dialog window cannot be sticky, as user has to switch between Coulometer and weighing program as routine operation. Autosaving the result file to local drive is a must.

iv.Alkalinity: Data precision stored in local log and in LIMS needs to be consistant. Login names for this app need to be consistent with LIMS & Users need to be able to reload calibration files once created.
