Chalk Fun

Create Your Own Driveway Math Path!

We like this activity because you can make it your own fact challenge. We found that just as much math practice goes into the planning of the path as when you follow it.  It's helpful to sketch your path on paper first and then grab some chalk and recreate it on the driveway. Pick a starting number (you can use dice, a deck of cards, or just choose a number) and follow your path's directions.  What number did you start with?  What number did you end with?  Try it with different numbers.  Have a family member try your numbers and compare your final answers. Do they match? We hope so!

We found it helpful to make a sketch of our math path first.

We used a ruler, but you can draw it free hand.  You can make your path as long as you'd like.

Using chalk, we then drew our path on the driveway.

We used a yardstick to keep things even, but you can draw it free hand.

Pick a starting number and complete your path by walking, hopping, skipping, whatever method you choose!

When a player landed on this square, she had to subtract 5 from her number.
