99 or Bust
99 or Bust is a card game that requires luck, accuracy and strategy to win. We like that players are getting lots of addition practice while playing a fun game. For this version:
Each player starts the game with 4 tokens. We used pennies.
Remove the face cards from a deck of cards and shuffle well. Each player is dealt 3 cards. Do not show anyone your cards. The rest of the deck is placed in the middle, face down.
The goal of this game is to NOT send the total number of points over 99.
Player one places a card down on the table and then replaces their card with one from the draw pile. A player should always have 3 cards. In picture 1, the player placed down a 7 so the game starts at 7.
The next player lays down a card and determines the new total, in this case 13. They pick up a card to keep 3 cards in their hand.
Play continues until someone is forced to put down a card that makes the total greater than 99. They must place their penny in the center of the table and another round starts.
The last player to have any tokens in their possession wins.
Player One put down a 7 so the game starts at 7.
Player Two put down a 6 and needs to add 7 and 6 and must say 13.
Player Three put down a 9 and now must add 13 and 9 and say 22. You must put a card down on each turn. Play continues until someone lays down a card that brings the total over 99.
Week 3's Math-Sterpiece challenge was so popular that we are featuring a new spin on it: Create an outside version with chalk. We'd like to credit @heidifesshenen for the inspiration.
You'll need chalk and painter's or masking tape.
Create your Math-Sterpiece outline with tape. You can make it any size you want.
Fill in with chalk and then remove the tape and admire your artwork.
