Close call
Close Call (2-4 players) is a great card game to play to practice double digit addition and place value skills. The goal of the game is to create a 2-digit plus 2-digit math equation with a sum as close to 99 as possible. To play:
From a deck of cards, remove the 10s, Jacks, Queens, and Kings. Keep the Jokers, they are zeros.
Shuffle and deal out 4 cards for each player.
Have 5 "tokens". We used Hershey Kisses to sweeten the pot, but you can use pennies or any other small objects.
Players create double digit addition equations, trying to come as close to 99 as possible. If you go over 99, you automatically lose.
The person whose score is closest to 99 wins a token. If it is a tie, each of the winning players takes a token, but you'll need to add a few more tokens to the pot.
The person with the most tokens at the end of the 5 rounds wins.
For younger children, you change the challenge to use two of the four cards to make a sum as close to ten as possible without going over.
Each player is dealt 4 cards.
Players must think of how to create an addition problem with a sum as close to 99 (without going over) as possible.
In this round, Player 1 on the left has a sum of 98 while Player 2 on the right has a sum of 80. Player 1 wins this round and takes a token.
Gather Materials
Toilet Paper Tube
Foam* or Foam Stickers
Paint and Paint Brush
Paper or cardboard
Glue* if needed
Newspaper to protect your work area
Rolling, Rolling, Rolling
Paint the foam pieces. Get a good amount of paint on each of them.
Holding the toilet paper roll by the edges, roll the tube on the paper or cardboard. Roll until you have used up the length of the paper. Repaint the foam and continue to roll!
Do you notice the repeat of the pattern?
Just Roll with Your Creativity
We let the red paint almost dry and then painted the foam in a lighter color and rolled over the red.
We wondered if we should have added a third color.
We then found our favorite section, cut it out to fit a frame and framed it.
We've never been so happy to frame a piece of cardboard!
