Geometry Artwork

Create your own geometric artwork.

This symmetrical activity is loaded with math!  You'll need a piece of paper, a ruler, and colored markers, pencils or crayons.  Use as many colors as you like.  What geometric shapes can you find in your finished art work?  How will this project change if you try it with 6 inch lines instead of 8?  10 inch lines?  The possibilities are only limited by the size of your paper.

Fold your paper in half horizontally then in half vertically.  Open your paper and make a cross by placing your ruler so that the 4 inch mark is in the center of your paper.  Draw an 8 inch line.

Turn your paper, and draw an 8 inch line in the other direction.  Each quadrant of your paper should now have a 4 inch line in it.

Using your ruler, draw a dot at the one inch point of each line.  You should have four dots on each line.

Think of combinations of 5! Pick a quadrant.  Using your ruler, connect the 1st dot on one line, to the 4th dot on its neighboring line.  Then connect the 2nd dot to the 3rd, the 3rd dot to the 2nd and the 4th dot to the first.  When you finish one quadrant, move on to the next.
