- Background Knowledge: is what you already know about a topic, either on your own or from your reading. Good readers connect that knowledge with whatever they read in order to understand it better and remember more.

- Word Endings: -al, -ly, -ful:

-al: means "of" or "like"

-ly: means "in a way" or "of or from"

- ful: means "full of" or "showing"

-al and -ful: change a noun into an adjective

-ly: changes an adjective into an adverb

- Accuracy: it is important to read words accurately so that you understand their meaning. Take time to skim the text, looking for unfamiliar words that you can sound out. Keep a dictionary handy.
