Home Room & Conferences

"Something to stand on and something to reach for..."

Homeroom class has two goals. One is to help students develop strong ties to the school community. Students do better when they feel a strong connection to school. The other is to help students develop clear plans for the future. When sitting in a middle school classroom, it's sometimes hard for students to see why what they do here matters. It does.

Conferences are October & March: NOT The Same as Elementary School

In October, parents meet with all of their child's teachers for face to face conferences. One important change from elementary school is that conference times are not scheduled in advance. We offer open conference times where all middle school teachers are available to meet at separate tables in the cafeteria. Parents come in and move from teacher to teacher as needed. This approach takes a little longer, but allows parents to meet with each of their child's teachers individually. Watch for specific dates in early school communications.

In March, students meet with their parents and their homeroom teacher to show off a portfolio of work they collect over the course of the year. These conferences are known as SLCs or Student Led Conferences. SLCs are conducted at the middle school and high school levels in the La Center School District. Students work for months to prepare for their conference. Their portfolios are often a source of great pride.
