Core principles of the IAESTE Exchange

The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) is a global non-governmental, non-profit organisation committed to facilitating mutually beneficial opportunities for students, employers, and universities through our renowned internship programme. 

Our paid internships abroad provide students with valuable professional experience and the chance to hone cross-cultural skills. 

Simultaneously, employers and universities gain access to a talented pool of international interns who inject fresh insights and energy into their operations or research initiatives.

While IAESTE's primary focus lies in STEM fields, we continually expand our horizons to encompass diverse areas, including marketing, management, and languages. “Technical Experience" in the sense of the aims of the Association does not mean experience restricted to technical study fields. It refers to experience through an on-the-job training to supplement university and college education of all relevant study fields. IAESTE is, therefore, not a faculty organisation, but its programme is open to all faculties and study fields.

1. The why of IAESTE internships

IAESTE internships are designed to bridge the gap between theoretical education and practical application. These internships allow students to put their knowledge into real-world practice, equipping them with practical skills and insights crucial for their future careers.

IAESTE internships connect people from different countries and cultures. When students from different places work together, they share ideas and learn from each other. By facilitating collaboration among students from diverse backgrounds, IAESTE creates an environment where mutual learning and respect can flourish.

lAESTE has been founded to exchange students of all faculties and study courses for which, as supplement to theoretical education, practical experience in Industry and other branches is essential. Many universities and colleges require, by law or compulsory regulations, a period of training in industry as part of the university or college curriculum; in some other countries and universities a training period Is recommended but not necessarily required.

2. Cooperation between committees

IAESTE operates through a network of committees in different countries. Collaboration between IAESTE committees worldwide forms the backbone of the organisation. Effective collaboration and communication among these committees are vital for the exchange program's success. Building trust and relations between the committees is crucial.

3. Internships/experience quality

IAESTE is committed to ensuring that all internships offered meet high-quality standards and deliver high-quality experience to students and hosting organisations (employers). Each committee plays a crucial role in ensuring that the internships in their respective countries meet IAESTE Exchange Quality  standards. This involves rigorous selection and matching processes to align student skills with employers' needs and provide the necessary administrative support.

4. Taking care of students

IAESTE is not just about internships, it's also about creating a supportive environment for students who are far from home. Committees need to work together to ensure the well-being of the students. This includes providing accommodation support, cultural integration, and addressing any challenges or concerns that may arise during their stay.

5. Data & Exchange Platform

Data management and transparency are crucial aspects of IAESTE operations. Collecting and analysing data related to internships, participants, and employers helps in continuous program improvement. 

The Exchange Platform (EP) is an operational framework, designed to streamline and facilitate the IAESTE Exchange process. It offers a range of essential functionalities for administering offers, managing nominations, and generating feedback reports. Committees are obliged to administer the exchange of internships through the Exchange Platform.

6. Exchange Quality Standards (reference)

IAESTE has established and maintains a set of quality standards that serve as a reference point for the exchange activities. These standards encompass various aspects of the exchange program, including internship selection, participant support, and administrative procedures. They serve as benchmarks to ensure consistency and excellence across the IAESTE network.
