Summer 2019
Post date: Jul 18, 2019 8:52:12 PM
Congratulations to Abby Frazier on her new book chapter publication in the Encyclopedia of World's Biomes, titled "Current Changes in Alpine Ecosystems of Pacific Islands".
Tom Giambelluca, Abby Frazier, Ryan Longman, Matt Lucas, Aurora Kagawa-Viviani, and summer intern Sidney Gerst all participated in the NOAA NIDIS workshop titled: "Drought Stories from Hawaii: A Workshop on Drought Recovery" on July 23 at the East-West Center. Lab affiliates Yinphan Tsang from NREM and Oliver Elison Timm from SUNY Albany were also participants.
Tom Giambelluca attended the Island Biology Conference 2019 in La Réunion, July 8-13. La Réunion in the Indian Ocean (over 28 hours of flying time from Hawai‘i...) has many similar climate and ecosystem characteristics as Hawai‘i, dealing with similar invasive species like Strawberry Guava (Psidium cattleyanum).
Products from last year's USGS Drought Workshop focused on the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) are now available! A 4-page newsletter and four 2-page fact sheets can be downloaded here: http://pi-casc.soest.hawaii.edu/EcodroughtReports.php. The workshop was held August 14-15, 2018 at the East-West Center, sponsored by the USGS National Climate Adaptation Science Center as part of their "island drought" workshop series, with the other workshop held in San Juan, Puerto Rico in May 2018.
Han Tseng traveled to Taiwan to visit a flux tower site and fog gauge
Aurora Kagawa-Viviani published a media article in Medium titled "Maunakea: Redirecting the lens onto the culture of mainstream science"
Abby Frazier and Han Tseng were featured in the Ka Pili Kai article titled "The Next Long Drought"
Welcome to our new summer intern, Sidney Gerst, a master's candidate from University of California, Santa Barbara. She will be working with Matt Lucas on a drought analysis using daily climate grids.
