BACKGROUND
As part of a larger project to assess the potential for bioenergy crop production, we are measuring ecosystem fluxes at two sites within the HC&S sugarcane plantation on Maui Island. At each site, we are maintaining an eddy covariance flux tower to measure exchanges of energy, water vapor, and carbon dioxide between the ecosystem and the atmosphere.
OBSERVATIONS and METHODS
EC towers deployed at multiple sites over a range of environmental conditions, over 2 year crop cycles.
Ground-based soil respiration and leaf area index (LAI) measurements
Calculate water use (ET) and and the net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide (NEE).
Statistical analysis of environmental controls on ET, NEE, Gross Primary Production, and Respiration.
Leaf-level photosynthesis measurements.
