Writing a good lead is the bait on the hook. The lead is what makes the reader interested in reading the rest of the paper. 

The topic sentence, usually found at the end of the topic paragraph, is the hook. The purpose of the topic sentence is to inform the reader of the content in the body of the paper. This prepares the reader's brain for the information found in the paper.
