A copy of the class brainstorm.
A detailed pre-write in a proper outline format.
A title page that includes the title, a by-line, date, and picture.
An introductory paragraph that includes both a lead (the bait) and a topic sentence (the hook).
Three body paragraphs on topics chosen from the class brainstorm.
A closing paragraph restating the topic sentences and drawing the paper to a close.
A picture for each of the body paragraphs properly cited and captioned.
A bibliography citing all resources used.
All papers will need to be submitted via your Google Docs folder.
Step One will include the pre-writing process.
We will do the brain storm as a class and can be copied from the board onto the back of your outline.
Next choose 3 topics from the brain stormed list, and research as many facts as possible. Finding information from several resources is highly recommended. List this information in your outline 1-2-2 note style. You should use short notes without complete sentences. Just write the basic information that will be hard to remember.
Copy any textual evidence you might want to use in your paper. This information is important, but should be used sparingly. Paraphrase in the majority of your paper.
Keep track of the resources you use and add to your bibliography as you go. For now, include the title, date, and URL. We will work on properly formatting a bibliography throughout the year.
The brain storm, outline, and bibliography will be graded.
Step Two will include the writing process.
You will start your paper with an introduction paragraph that includes a lead. A lead is the bait of the paper that helps the reader want to read more. A variety of leads can be used including questions, very short stories, dialogue, and facts that won't occur in the body of the paper. Often these are used as pairs to make the lead more intriguing.
At the end of the paragraph, write a clear topic sentence that introduces the 3 sub-topics chosen from the brain storm list.
Now, write the body paragraphs. Remember the paper is about your topic not about you. The pronouns I, you, me, and we should not be used.
Finally, write a closing paragraph that restates the topic sentence from the introduction and closes the paper. Do not introduce any new information here.
The paper, including an introduction, body, and conclusion will be graded.
Step Three will include the publishing process.
Please read your paper out loud to listen for grammatical mistakes. Even better have a partner read your paper out loud to you. Their brain won't fix your mistakes.
Check your paper carefully for editing mistakes. Pay special attention to the end of your paper. This is where most of the silly mistakes will take place. Use spell check if needed.
Add your pictures to the body. Make sure the pictures do not disrupt your paragraph by placing them either to the left or to the right, not in the middle. Make sure the size of the picture in appropriate for your paper.
Complete your title page and add a picture.
Your brainstorming and outline should be handed in separately.
The rest of the paper should be one paper in this order: title page, paper, bibliography.
Evidence of editing and revising will be graded.
Pictures should add to the paper not just decorate. Be sure they do not distract the reader.
Happy Research!
