Independent Reading

Home reading hours should equal 150 minutes or more per week.

Reading is the key to your child’s education. Much of your student’s time in school is spent learning to read. In Grades 5 and 6, students begin reading to learn. This requires a new set of skills. In order for your student to master these skills, they will have to practice daily.

Therefore, reading homework becomes imperative,


Independent Reading can include:

  • Reading chapter books at the student's personal reading level.

  • Reading picture books to a younger sibling.

  • Reading magazines.

  • Reading Assigned Comprehension Club Books.

  • Reading Informational Text

  • Reading Activities on Lexia.
