Reading Strategies

Throughout the year we will be working on specific strategies that good readers use. These strategies are repeatedly discussed and practiced during in-class reading. As good readers, students should also be using these strategies in their own independent reading.

Strategies--- are general, metacognitive techniques that a reader uses to better understand and engage with the text. Seven cognitive strategies of effective readers that will be covered include: making connections, asking questions, making inferences, visualizing, determining important information, monitoring comprehension, and understanding text structure.

Skills--- focus on particular text elements that aid comprehension. Skills to be covered include: main idea and details, author's purpose, cause and effect, classify and categorize, compare and contrast, draw conclusions, fact and opinion, figurative language, genre, plot, point of view, predictions, character traits, sequence, story structure, explicit information, theme and summarize.
