Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Finished initial prototype
Fabrication led to a concern regarding how to interface between the cutting wire and the mesh bag closing
If we weave the cutting wire through the mesh bag so that they both close at the same time, the cutting wire does not cut as well as without the mesh bag
Decided to keep these components separate - first close the mesh bag, then cut the algae
Tested initial prototype in Del Mar Lagoon
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Fabricated a prototype of our design
This includes the chicken wire housing, top and bottom sheet metal pieces, mesh bag, nylon cutting wire, and Delrin pieces to hold the cutting wire in place
Updated the first draft of the report and website with instructor/TA comments
Updated the sampler CAD drawing
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Buy nylon music wire, fishing line, steel wire for cutting wire options (Tanima)
Look into waterproof camera purchase for camera visualization (David)
Look into waterproof LED lighting for camera visualization (David)
Machine metal column pieces for sampler (Joseph)
Fabricate Dispenser (All)
Finalize cutting wire material choice (Bridget)
Fabricate weight holders for sampler (Joseph)

5/13: Phone meeting with Chuck
Suggested to make cutting wire independent of mesh bag closing instead of woven within mesh bag netting
In this case, we discussed possibly having two wires: one for the cutting of the sample and the other for the closing of the bag
Top and bottom will close simultaneously
We decided to use this idea
Camera quadrant visualization:
Will be used to take a picture/video of sampling area - post processing with video is fine
But for now he said main priority should be getting the sampler to work consistently
We narrowed down camera selection to 2 choices, and will ask Chuck what he thinks
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
5/9 Instructor meeting
Suggested welding metal pieces together (top/bottom cylindrical sheet metal pieces, sheet metal pieces that go around the mesh wiring) and then wrap mesh around structure
As of now, we are going to fasten the cylindrical sheet metal pieces with screw/nut/washer but we are considering welding for the final design
CAD is high priority - it will help with figuring out how everything interfaces with each other
We updated the CAD drawing - still working out some minor details

Risks and Areas of Concern
Should we use Nylon wire or fishing wire to cut?
What material should we use for the cord/tubing and how should we interface it with the capsule?
