Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
We have finalized what we will be doing for our risk reduction and will finish our risk reduction during this week. Our upcoming schedule is:
Wed 3/9: Purchase parts, telescoping rod and cord dispenser fabrication
Sat 3/12: Test dispensing mechanisms in water
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Met with Chuck at Torrey Pines State Reserve
Attempted to find some algae locations and get Chuck to fill out budget form
Result of meeting: algae locations were hard to find, Chuck will talk to Dr. T about the budget
Met with Tom Chalfant
Recommended how much force to uproot the algae using a spring scale or electronic scale
Electronic scale gives better force estimate
Contacted Scripps Researchers
Sierra Donaldson: Benthic samplers
Samantha Clemen: Algae researcher
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Meet with Tom/Ian with Lab Needs form (Joseph)
Make telescoping rod (All)
Find cord dispenser (All)
Set-up meeting with Scripps researchers to learn more about types of samplers and algae (Bridget)
Outline presentation slides (David)
Research materials to get information about corrosion properties (ie. against salty waters) (Tanima)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Chuck
said we can potentially find more macroalgae in lagoons along the 101, north of UCSD if we wanted to see and feel what we are dealing with
We will probably visit one of these lagoons next week to find out more about algae’s physical properties
Reiterated project objectives: easy to use and simple design
He explained different types of sediment samplers: Van Veen, Ponar
We looked up videos to see how each sampler works and get ideas for our sampler
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Make sure Chuck understands the budget form
We gave the budget forms to Chuck on Monday
he said that that we should tell him what we want (ideally buy everything at once) and he will contact the SPAWAR financial contact
He will also contact Dr. on Tuesday to sort everything else about the form out
Figure out exactly what to do for risk reduction
Camera visibility depends on time of day, amount of pollution, etc.
Risks and Areas of Concern for Risk Reduction
Properly releasing the sampler
Properly placing the sampler
Ease of use
Sampler lifespan
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Methods to build telescoping device
Type of material (ie. PVC pipes)
Borrow cord dispenser from on-campus lab/engineering group or buy cord dispenser from hardware store
