TurnitIn is an online originality advisor and plagiarism detection tool available for use by DE teachers. It may also be used by a teacher to digitally provide feedback and online annotations of work to students.
As of the 2026-27 school year, TurnItIn was integrated with Google Classroom. In order to have students submit work to the TurnItIn service, you create a Google Classroom assignment, and choose the TurnItIn Add-On as documented here. Students do NOT need to create a separate TurnItIn account.
Most of the answer below are from Turnitin's official Google Classroom FAQ page.
No. Instructors can use the integration in their existing Google Classroom classes. The setup does not require them to create new classes.
Students must select the Turnitin attachment inside the Google Classroom assignment. This launches the Turnitin submission workflow, where they can upload and submit their work for Turnitin processing.
The recommended workflow is for instructors to begin in Google Classroom, open the Turnitin attachment, and complete grading and feedback in Turnitin.
Students can still upload files to the native Google Classroom submission area, but Turnitin cannot process files submitted there.
For similarity checking and Turnitin grading and feedback workflows, students must submit through the Turnitin attachment.
We recommend that teachers clearly instruct students to submit through the Turnitin attachment.
No. The Turnitin start date controls when students can begin submitting to the Turnitin assignment.
The visibility and scheduling of the Google Classroom assignment itself are controlled in Google Classroom.
As of September, 19, 2023, the TurnItIn service no longer supports submitting a paper for a student who is not enrolled in a course. However, a teacher can submit a document for any student enrolled in a course. As of September 2026, this can not be done via Google Classroom. You use the Turnitin website to do this. See Standard assignment: submitting on behalf of students for directions.
