Classroom projection

Computer and iPad Projection

Wireless Projection

Mac or iPad

Most on-campus classrooms are equipped for wireless iPad and Mac projection using an Apple TV device. If you are using a Mac or iPad in a classroom equipped with an Apple TV for projection, you should use AirPlay mirroring bulit-in to MacOS. This wirelessly projects images, video, and sound. Press the Apple button on the wall panel to select the Apple TV and follow the directions from Apple here for Mac or here for iPad/iPhone.

Windows

If you are using a Windows computer, classroom projectors are also connected to WPS/WiD devices for wireless projection. Some of our newer spaces have the Crestron Airmedia hardware installed. These two devices work the same way, and you can connect to them over the same Crestron Air Media Software.

Air media for PC or Mac can be downloaded from here: https://www.crestron.com/Products/Featured-Solutions/AirMedia/Airmedia-Apps. For Windows computers, download and install the software labeled Windows Deployable Application.

Wired (HDMI) projection

Any device with an HDMI or VGA port can be connected to the wired projection port/cable in classrooms.  Connect the (usually) black VGA or HDMI cable in the room to your computer and the wall panel, then select the wall control button labeled VGA, Laptop, or PC (not Tablet PC, Apple nor WPS). Finally, follow the directions below for Windows or Mac OS if the image does not automatically appear.

In order to send sound through the classroom speakers using VGA, you also need to connect the second, thinner part of the black cable to your computer headphone jack (and makes sure the other end of the thin headphone cable is plugged into the wall.)  You do not need to do this for HDMI.

Note that some classrooms (e.g. MS building, STEM building) have HDMI cables/connectors in classrooms while others (with older AV systems including Campus Center) have VGA connectors. Contact Computer Services if you need an adapter to connect your school laptop.

Windows

(This works in Windows 7 and later.)

For Lenovo laptops, you may need an HDMI to VGA adapter for older AV setups.. (Teachers can get one in the Taub Center.) Sometimes your screen will automatically display after you plug in the VGA cable and select the correct button on the wall panel.  If it does not, hold down the "Window" button on the keyboard and press P. (Windows button is usually a key or two to the left of the space bar.)  Choose Duplicate.

Mac OSX

You may need an adapter that provides a VGA port for older classroom AV setups. (Teachers can get one in the Taub Center.)  Do the following on the Mac in order to mirror the display if it does not display automatically.

Note that mirroring to a VGA connected projector via wire is NOT THE SAME THING as AirPlay Mirroring.

If you get video but no sound, make sure the Sound Output setting (System Preferences > Sound > Output) is correct.  For wired, VGA projection, the sound output should be set to headphone jack.

Dual-Screen Projection with two different images

In a classroom with two different projectors, it is possible to project a two different images from two different devices such as a laptop and and iPad. See the document at this link for more details.

Troubleshooting

Apple TV issues

including how to restart an Apple TV.

(Click the heading above to expand this topic.)

If your room does not show up on iPad or Mac:

How to restart an Apple TV

Apple TV projection problems are frequently fixed by restarting the Apple TV. These problems may include it disconnecting after a short period of use. An Apple TV remote is required for restart. They are usually silver. (Teachers can get an Apple TV remote in the Taub Center.) In the Hajjar STEM building, a software version of the remote is a feature of the AV panel.

Black Screen  with Audio

This will happen when using screen mirroring and services like amazon prime, HBO max.  If you are using a personal account, open the HBOMax or Amazon Prime app on your iPhone (or iPad) and connect to Apple TV using the AirPlay icon within the app (examples below). Please note, screen mirroring is blocked, you must connect to Apple TV using the AirPlay icon within the app.

Netflix does not support AirPlay.
