Safari on iPad troubleshooting

Safari, is the default iPad web browser, which means it is what opens when you tap the DE Homepage icon or a link in an email message. Also, it is the easiest browser for accessing the "Open In" feature, which lets you put a document posted on a web page such as My DE into an app such as Notability.

Online web-based textbook does not open when clicking on link in Safari

This problem has been seen when using the Discovering French textbook (my.hrw.com) and Discovering Algebra (http://www.flourishkh.com). It may occur with other books or services accessed via the Safari web browser.

Symptom

When clicking on the link to view the textbook ("Book Pages" for Discovering French), the link changes color indicating the page opened but nothing else happens.

Solution

Pop-up blocking in Safari is preventing pages from loading correctly.

To disable pop blocking in Safari on an iPad:

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Tap Safari on the left-side of the screen. (You may need to scroll down on the left side to see Safari.)
  3. On the right side of the screen, set Block Pop-ups to OFF. The slider will not show green when off.
  4. Close Safari for the settings to take effect. To close Safari:
    1. Double-tap home button.
    2. Find Safari in the list of open apps.
    3. Swipe up on the Safari listing to close Safari.

Textbook or other website hangs with "Loading" message

Symptom

After logging into an online textbook, the book seems to start to load but stops with a "Loading" message. This could also happen on other websites. This problem might also show up as a page only partially loading even though you've tried reloading it multiple times.

Solution

If you have strong Internet connection, clear the "Website Data" and Cookies in Safari. Here are detailed directions for that:

    1. First, make sure you practice patience and wait at least 20 seconds for the page to load.
    2. Next, confirm you have a good Internet connection by going to an unrelated website in Safari and seeing it load properly.
    3. Then, close all tabs in Safari.
    4. Launch the Settings app.
    5. Tap Safari on the left-side of the screen. (You may need to scroll down on the left side to see Safari.)
    6. On the right side of the screen, scroll down to the bottom and choose one of the following:
      1. for IOS 7: Clear Cookies and Data
      2. for iOS 8: Clear History and Website Data
    7. When prompted, select the Clear option to confirm.

If you are still having trouble with an online textbook, please see Mr. Campbell in Ump 205 or go to the Taub Center. Remember that most online textbooks are available from any Internet connected computer so even if you are having trouble with your iPad, you can temporarily access your book by using a home computer. See Online Textbooks for a list of textbook links.

Can not login to My DE using Safari

The following will should only happen if you changed Safari settings from the defaults as this problem does not usually occur if the iPad is still set how it was when the iPad was new.

Symptom

At the My DE login screen, the login screen just reappears after entering a CORRECT username and password.

Solution

Do NOT block all cookies in Safari settings. Here is how to correct the settings:

    1. Open Settings app.
    2. Select Safari on the left. (You may need to scroll down on the left to see it.)
    3. Look under the Privacy & Security area on the right.
    4. Block Cookies should be set to "From third parties and advertisers" OR Never. (The default for students who did not change the settings is "From third parties".)
