Angela Hedley-Mitchell, Executive Director of Humanities

Angela Hedley-Mitchell has served the Boston Public Schools (BPS) for 21 years. Angela spent 15 years at the Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers (EMK), where she served as an inclusion history teacher and taught U.S. History I, U.S. History II, Ancient World History, Modern World History, African American Studies and Economics. During her tenure as a teacher, in 2006, Angela was awarded Boston Teacher of the Year. She later served the school as an Assistant Headmaster taking on the roles of Advanced Placement Coordinator, department chair, professional development developer and chair of the Student Support Team.

In 2016, Angela joined the Academic Response Team where she worked as an instructional coach with the turnaround high schools. In addition to her BPS responsibilities, Angela previously served as Adjunct Faculty at Northeastern University and a curriculum consultant in South Africa. Angela holds a B.A. in Economics from the State University of New York at Buffalo, a M.Ed. from Northeastern University in Curriculum and Instruction, a CAGS from Simmons University in Educational Leadership and earned a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University in 2023.  In her spare time, Angela enjoys spending time with her three children and shuttling them to various sports and activities.

Annie Brown, Program Director 

Annie Brown has been a History and Humanities teacher for more than 20 years in both middle and high schools. With a daughter (Luna) in 2nd grade, Annie is excited to learn from and support the elementary schools in BPS.


Annie did her student teaching in Boston at Jeremiah Burke HS and then taught at her alma mater Cambridge Rindge and Latin HS. She moved to Los Angeles for 13 years where she taught in a project-based charter school focused on social justice, a LAUSD pilot school, and private school for girls. Annie has taught everything (Early World History, Modern World, US History, Geography, Economics, Government, African American History and American Studies (a partnership with U. Mass Boston) and her favorite topics are focus on civil and human rights and activism. Since moving back home to Boston in 2019, she has been focused on college completion and working with First Gen students to support them both academically and socially-emotionally as they transition to college.


Annie has been a docent at a federal era townhouse in Washington DC and a Frank Lloyd Wright home in Hollywood and is eager to support Place-Based Learning in Boston. For fun, she does nerdy things like read nonfiction books, watch the news, and write on topics in education. She has a B.A in History with minors in African-American Studies and English from the University of Pennsylvania in Philly, and a M.Ed. from Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Nathalie Christina Louis, Program Director 

Nathalie is excited to bring 12 years of classroom experience to the Academics and Professional Learning Department. She has a deep rooted love for education. She holds a Masters of Arts in Education with a specialization in Teaching and Learning from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As an undergraduate, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and International Business from Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida. Nathalie joined Boston Public Schools in 2018 in the role of Family Engagement Facilitator when she relocated to Massassuchetts.  


She brings with her a strategic approach to teaching that embodies rigorous student engagement grounded in innovative teacher facilitation. As a former Florida educator, her instruction was in World History, World Geography, US History, and Civics to middle school students. Some of her other roles while working in the classroom included Social Studies Department Head, History Curriculum Leader, and Instructional Coach. She was the recipient of the following awards while with Broward County Public Schools: State of Florida Best and Brightest Teacher 2017-2018, Glades Middle School Social Studies Teacher of The Year 2014- 2015 and Attucks Middle School Social Studies Teacher of the Year 2012-2013. 


In her time off, Nathalie values being with her family and friends whenever possible. She loves traveling and photography. Some of her favorite places are hidden gems in Kenya, Thailand, Italy, and Hawaii. She also enjoys crafts and scented candles. 

Kaitlin Torossian, Program Director 

Kaitlin is joining the team during her 8th year with Boston Public Schools. She spent her first seven years with New Teacher Development, after serving as a history teacher for nine years in Lawrence, MA and Meriden, CT. 

Kaitlin spends her free time with her family and enjoys playing tennis for exercise. She also serves on her local elementary school's PTO. Kaitlin looks forward to working with all the social studies teachers in Region 1!

John Gould, Program Director 

John lives in Medway, MA with his wife Laura, daughter Mary (21) and

son, Jack (17). He attended Northeastern University and earned a B.A in

History and minor in Political Science (95'). He also earned a M. Ed. (97') from University of Massachusetts Lowell, a M.A. in History (‘02) from Providence College, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (13') from N.E.U. John was a high school principal, and has taught at the middle, high school and college levels.
