THANKSGIVING: RETHINKING HISTORICAL NARRATIVES
November 23 ---Thanksgiving provides a great opportunity to help students understand that how we shape the historical narrative has an impact--it gives voice to some and silences others. In the past few decades, largely due to activism by indigenous peoples, many history teachers have begun to critically examine the traditional (mainstream) narrative of Thanksgiving. This New York Times "Room for Debate" Rethinking the Way We Teach Thanksgiving from 2015 provides many perspectives. How should you approach this with students? Ramona Peters of the Mashpee Wompanoag tribe provides guidelines differentiated by grade band and an teacher from Illinois argues that Thanksgiving--like everything--is best taught through an inquiry lens that includes many perspectives.
Midterm Elections
November 1 ---Midterm Elections are coming up on November 8th and we have curated a set of resources for teachers interested in teaching students about the elections, the history of voting rights, or discussing current hot-button issues in the classroom. Please check out the BPS History Dept. "Teaching the Election" Resources here!
October, 6 -- If you are looking for resources to teach about the upcoming holiday, check out our Curriculum Spotlight: Indigenous Peoples Day. Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1937. The shift to honoring Indigenous People's Day instead of celebrating the colonizer has been controversial and offers an opportunity to examine the power of shaping the historical narrative. The curriculum spotlight examine the changing story of Columbus and the importance of incorporating indigenous perspectives in our classrooms.
We are always adding and updating resources. Please feel free to share a resource as well as comments and feedback about what you would like to see on our webpage.

The Museum of Fine Arts Boston wants to make it easier for you to find digital images from the MFA collection that can support your teaching and spark new directions of thought, learning, and connection for your students.

GLOBAL SCHOLARS
September 20, 2022
BPS History/SS is excited to partner with Global Scholars, an international digital exchange program connecting public school students ages 10 to 13 in cities around the world to complete a shared curriculum about solving a global problem while building student's global competence.
The program runs from Sept/Oct. to June and requires a 2 hour commitment per week.
All curriculum and materials for the program are provided as well as PD sessions to support each of the five units.
The program is free.
This year's theme is WATER SECURITY locally, nationally, and globally. Students work collaboratively to come up with possible solutions, and then share their ideas in online discussion boards with classmates worldwide. If you are interested in having your school participate or would like to find out more, contact abrown14@bostonpublicschools.org
