70333Y/70334Y Freshman Band
1.0 credit - 2 semesters
Grades: 9
Prerequisite - Middle School Band
SPECIAL CONDITION: Performances occur during the school day, evenings and on weekends. Attendance for these events is part of the grade requirement for the class. If a performance is missed, the instructor must be presented with a note from the parents explaining the situation. A make-up assignment will then be made available. Having to work is not considered an excused absence.
The Freshmen Band will consist of all freshmen band students at Baraboo High School.
Priority Standards:

- Demonstrate the ability to read and understand music terminology & symbols. (Demonstrates knowledge of music concepts and vocabulary.)

70455Y/70456Y Thunderbird Band
1.0 credit - 2 semesters
Grades: 10-12
Prerequisite - Freshman or Thunderbird Band

The Thunderbird Band is open to all instrumental musicians grades 10-12. This is the marching band for home football games and parades. When the marching component is finished, this group becomes a concert band and plays traditional concerts for the rest of the year.

Prerequisite: Audition/Invitation
SPECIAL CONDITION: Performances occur during the school day, evenings and on weekends. Attendance for these events is part of the grade requirement for the class. If a performance is missed, the instructor must be presented with a note from the parents explaining the situation. A make-up assignment will then be made available. Having to work is not considered an excused absence. Specific concert attire is required for performances. Cost is $40.00 for dresses. $25.00 for tuxedo accessories. Men must provide black dress pants.
Membership in the Symphony Band is by audition or instructor consent only. Auditions are held in March for the following year. Membership is only open to students going into grades 10-12. The repertoire for this group is much more intense and studied more in depth than other instrumental performance groups. Marching Band is not part of this group’s curriculum.

SPECIAL CONDITION: This course is limited to 20 students.
This course is open to any student who wants to explore and develop their ability to perform, improvise, and write music in a rock-style band. No prior performing experience is required, but students do need to be willing to read simple music in a non-traditional format. The class focuses on learning and performing rock music throughout the semester in an ensemble-based context, concluding in the performance of a live rock “concert.”
Students will have the opportunity to learn acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, drum set/percussion, keyboard/piano, and vocals.
The course will explore American popular rock music. Music learned and performed in class is collaboratively chosen by the teacher and students. The course also includes learning and performing rock and pop music using free internet-based sources such as YouTube, lyric and music chart websites.
70435Y/70436Y Concert Choir
1.0 Credit - 2 semesters
Grades: Soprano/Alto 10-12, Tenor/Bass 9-12
Prerequisite: Interest in choral singing
This course is for sopranos and altos in grades 10-12 and tenors and basses in grades 9-12 who enjoy singing and want to grow as both an individual singer and choir team member. No audition is required. Students will learn basic music theory, development of intelligent musicianship and healthy vocal technique.

PREREQUISITE: Interest in choral singing

While this choir is open to all high school grades, freshmen who sing soprano or alto will be expected to start in Treble Choir before being enrolled in Concert or Chamber Choir. Prerequisite: Instructor consent or successful completion of a pretest with a score of 80% or better prior to registration.
AP Music Theory is a year-long advanced course for students who want to study the fundamentals of music like pitch, rhythm, chords, and voice leading, while also exploring chromaticism, late Romanticism, and an introduction to 20th-century music. Students must have a basic knowledge of music reading skills. See a music instructor if you are interested in taking this class.
Taking advantage of the Advanced Placement (AP) courses at Baraboo High School offers students a chance to begin college-level studies while working towards earning their high school diploma. Through AP, you can get a jump start on your postsecondary education.

70438 Song Writing
0.5 Credits - 1 Semester (Spring)
Grades: 10th - 12th
PREREQUISITE: Music Theory is recommended, but not required.
This class is for students who are interested in songwriting. Songwriters of all levels from beginner to experienced are welcome. This course will cover the basics of songwriting, basic music notation, melodic writing, lyric writing, song structure and more. Students will work individually as well as collaborate in small groups. Students can write their songs utilizing piano, guitar, ukulele, or digital technology resources. The final project will include notating and performing a song or songs they have written during the class.
