Internet Learning

Internet Learning (web use/literacy/research)

It's long been said that an infinite number of monkeys, pounding away at an infinite number of
typewriters, would eventually recreate the works of William Shakespeare. Thanks to the
Internet, we now know that this is not true.

When we come to assess people we should be fairer with ourselves.
Human beings were born of risen apes, not fallen angels.
And so what shall we wonder at - our massacres, our missiles, or our symphonies?
The miracle of humankind is not how far we have sunk, but how magnificently we have risen.
We will be known amongst the stars not by our corpses, but by our poems.

NC WiseOwl Overview (Wildly modified from original)

OVERVIEW

NC WiseOwl (NC Online Windows for Learning) has been providing online subscription resources for our schools for the last decade. Our mission is to ensure that all of our public and charter school students have access to a collection of online resources for use in research projects and homework assignments, without regard to the economic status of their local school system. NC WiseOwl has three major strengths as an educational resource:

    • Quality: Information on the Internet at-large is often unreliable and inappropriate for use in the K-12 education field. WiseOwl’s subscription databases provide access to articles from thousands of magazines, from online encyclopedias and reference sources, and from a variety of other sources that are only available to paying customers.

    • Economy: By purchasing databases at the state level we are able to achieve an economy-of-scale that saves taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars over the cost of individual school systems purchasing the same resources.

    • Safety: The World Wide Web was never intended as a K-12 educational tool. Using WiseOwl for online research places students in a safer, advertising-free environment with age-appropriate information and tools that assist students with the research process.

NORTH CAROLINA'S FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT LEARNING COMMUNITY'S ONLINE NETWORK

(NC FALCON)

"This network has been developed in an effort to provide North Carolina teachers with a basic understanding of formative assessment and illustrate the role it should play in a comprehensive, balanced assessment system. A comprehensive, balanced assessment system includes formative assessment, interim/benchmark assessments, and statewide assessments that are aligned to state standards. Each component is important and should be valued for what it contributes.

Formative assessment is an essential component of this system because it forms the foundation of teaching and learning and should occur more often than any other assessment. In contrast to summative assessment, formative assessment is focused on collaboration in the classroom and identifying learning gaps during instruction that can be addressed before end-of-year, summative assessments. The online professional development modules located in NC FALCON are intended to serve as a primer for teachers to learn more about the impact formative assessment can have on their instruction and help their students achieve targeted learning goals.

This paradigm shift from face-to-face training to electronic professional development delivery empowers teachers and allows them to access training according to their schedules. The professional development modules are self-paced, do not have to be completed in one session, and may be accessed 24/7."

NC FALCON Implementation Guide

About: "Since it officially began offering online access in April 1998, NC LIVE has served all North Carolina libraries with equitable access to a core selection of digital content and services, and has saved the state millions through its collaborative efforts. Many things have changed since that time, but NC LIVE’s mission remains the same - to help libraries in their efforts to support education, enhance economic development and improve quality of life.

Founded in 1997 by representatives from the NC Community Colleges, the NC Independent Colleges and Universities, the NC Public Library Directors Association, the University of North Carolina, and the State Library of North Carolina, NC LIVE has served as a consortium of these institutions providing programs to support 200 member libraries and their communities across the state. The NC LIVE Foundation raises funds to help support the program costs of the NC LIVE consortium. The Foundation Board is comprised of the members of the NC LIVE Librarian Council Executive Committee.

NC LIVE offers free electronic access to resources for all ages on topics ranging from careers, business, and investing, to health, history, and genealogy. Ebooks, audiobooks, videos, magazines, newspapers, journals, language-learning tools, and other online materials available through NC LIVE are designed for at-home use, and are available from any Internet connection via library websites, and through NCLIVE.org. All North Carolinians may use NC LIVE resources through local public libraries, community colleges, or college and university libraries.
