The 2024 Summer Olympics are being held in Paris. The Olympics are an upcoming international multi-sport event that millions attend. The Olympic Games are held every four years, and since 1994 they have alternated between the Summer and Winter Olympics every two years. This year's Olympics take place from the 26th of July through August 11th 2024 in Paris, France. Paris has previously hosted 2 other times, 1908 and 1924. The last summer Olympics were delayed one year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Some of the most popular Olympic sports are Swimming, Gymnastics, Rhythmic Diving, and Basketball. 2024 is the first year that break dancing will be showcased as an Olympic sport. The Games will be the first to feature the exact same number of male and female athletes. This is the last year of the Olympics that will be held under the presidency of IOC (International Olympic Committee) President Thomas Bach.
The way the events work is there are different sites in one general area.(Paris and neighboring cities) There will be 15 Olympic and 11 Paralympic venues in central Paris. So for example, in the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles there will be volleyball, table tennis, handball and weightlifting. Where at the Eiffel Tower Stadium the only thing taking place will be beach volleyball. Some of the main sites will be: Stade de France, Paris Aquatic Centre, Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, Place de la Concorde, Pont d'Iéna and many, many more.
According to Olympic.com, “10,500 athletes at the Olympic Summer Games in Paris in 2024, around 10,500 athletes from 206 NOCs will compete. At the Olympic Winter Games, there are usually around 2,900 athletes from more than 80 NOCs taking part in the competitions.” NOC stands for National Olympic Committee. There are 206 people in the NOC. This includes 193 member states of the UN.
According to Olympic.com “Summer Olympics consists of 28 mandatory "core" sports that persist between Games and a maximum of six optional sports that can be added for each edition of the Games.” Some of the optional sports for the future are breakdancing (breaking), along with skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing.
