Clubs at Cal Young are one of the many amazing contributions to the middle school community. These clubs provide students with the opportunity to feel included and have a group of people who share the same interests as them. Cal Young offers a variety of options such as Art, Speech and Debate, Lego Robotics, Coding/Board Games club, Chess, Dungeons and Dragons and Model UN. This article will inform incoming middle schoolers or anyone else here at Cal Young who may be interested in joining any of these clubs.
These clubs all have such good benefits. Art Club helps reduce your stress and communication skills. Speech and Debate has so many benefits like deeper research skills, critical thinking, leadership/college skills and so many more. Lego Robotics offers hands - on learning and promotes teamwork and collaboration. Coding/Board games and Chess Club club helps you learn problem solving and strategic thinking. Model UN prepares you for your career while also developing your skills in leadership, global awareness, etc. Then finally, Dungeons and Dragons relieves stress and boosts your self esteem.
Joining a club in middle school develops major skills like your critical thinking, collaboration and much more. It also connects you with more people in your school and allows you to meet new people. In an article by Cheyenne Stewart she states, “High school pulled me out of my very lonely middle school years and molded me into a servant leader, but it took more than the classroom. I needed a club to find belonging amongst my peers…”
When you find your group of people and more people come along you can be the friend you wished you had to them. Cheyenne says, “The upperclassmen extended the kind of advice, guidance and kindness I hadn’t experienced elsewhere. The club was inclusive and I finally felt at home.” If you’re still on the fence about joining a club at Cal Young I can tell you that in my opinion it would be a great decision.
