Prepare the Paper: Tear paper into small, 1-inch squares and soak them in water for a few hours or overnight.
2. Create Pulp: Blend the soaked paper with plenty of water until it reaches a smooth, consistent mush.
3. Prepare the Vat: Pour the pulp into a large tub filled with water. A higher ratio of pulp to water creates thicker paper.
4. Form Sheets: Submerge the mold and deckle (screen side up) vertically into the tub, then turn it horizontally to scoop up the pulp.
5. Drain and Couch: Lift the frame, allowing excess water to drain. "Couch" (transfer) the wet sheet onto a flat, absorbent surface like a towel or felt.
6. Dry: Sponge off excess water from the back of the screen. The paper can be hung to dry or left on the flat surface for 1–2 days.
Tips for Success
Additions: Customize your paper by adding petals, seeds, or liquid watercolor to the blender.
Texture: A shorter blend time leaves more visible fibers, while a longer blend creates smoother paper.
Flattening: Place heavy books on top of the drying paper to prevent curling.
