We know companies like Uber and Lyft require background checks, but some critics say they don't go far enough. According to the Boston Globe, the state of Massachusetts requires drivers to pass a two-part background check: the one by the companies and a more in-depth one by the state. The Globe reported that nearly 8,000 potential drivers who passed the company screening failed the state screening, revealing criminal records including things like drunk driving arrests and sexual offenses. The main difference, according to the Globe, is that company screening only went seven years back, but the state screening had no limit. "All indications are background checks are going to be required. They can be conducted by UBER, or Lyft, or a third party,” said local Assemblyman Ray Walter, who has been a vocal Western New York politician in terms of legalizing the industry for upstate New York.

Uber will start doing annual criminal background checks on U.S. drivers and hire a company that constantly monitors criminal arrests as it tries to do a better job of keeping riders safe. The move announced Thursday is one of several actions taken by the ride-hailing company under new CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, who said that the changes aren't just being done to polish the company's image, which has been tarnished by driver misbehavior and a long string of other embarrassing failings.

People applying to be an Uber driver must provide their full name, birth date, Social Security number, driver’s license number, insurance and vehicle documentation. Once that information is collected, Uber uses a background investigation service, Checkr, to dig a little deeper. Checkr runs a Social Security trace to find out where the applicant has lived the previous seven years and cross-checks the addresses with national, state and local databases for convictions. According to Uber's website, the background check also includes the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website, National Criminal Search "and several different databases used to flag suspected terrorists."
