There are multiple types of background checks and “products” — the official documents detailing your record — available from local and provincial police forces, as well as the RCMP and some third-party companies. They explore and disclose varying degrees of information. Not all forces offer the same product, so ensure you’re getting the correct type of check done. Criminal Record check: The most common type of background check. It details an individual’s convictions — and non-convictions, if applicable — in the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records.

But perhaps the most damning criticism focused on the citizenship process, particularly with the immigration department, where serious holes in the screening process were found. Citizens have been granted legal status in Canada based on incomplete information, failure to do complete criminal background checks and in some cases, outright fraud. The Auditor General's staff audited a small sample of the 260,000 applications of people who became citizens in 2014. Dozens of them were found to have obvious discrepancies where immigration officials had failed to catch what was clearly fraudulent information.
Why would an employer decide to carry out fingerprint screening? Reassurance. With fingerprints, an employer knows for sure if a person does or does not have a criminal record that may be disclosed. This assurance is obvious as it is mandated by the RCMP that all name and date-of-birth checks contain the disclaimer “Positive identification that a criminal record may or may not exist at the National Criminal Records repository can only be confirmed by fingerprint comparison.” That is not to say name checks are not valid, but fingerprints are the gold standard of certainty — a person may attempt to misrepresent her identity, but she cannot alter her fingerprints. I am reprinting it here in a separate post since there are only two days left to the current term and Congress will need to make good use of their remaining citizenship passes.
"It's simple to check a citizenship applicant out (Congress Members take note):
a) Check their friends list. If they have friends in high places in other nations, or if they have a lot of friends in an enemy country, skip them.
Check out their shouts. If they claim to be Canadian, but their shout is in Arabic or Hungarian - chances are they are not Canadian. Skip them.
c) Check out their donations list. If they are donating to or from, lets say, the Party for the Advancement of PEACE GC, skip them. If they were getting daily weapons from Indonesia or Russia, skip them.
d) Check out their newspaper to see what articles they've written. Go back to the beginning. If its in Farsi, skip them."
There used to be a good tool to check out where a specific citizen fought in the past, but unfortunately the site is currently down. But as you can see, performing background checks is easy, and it's a bit difficult to hide something in this game.
