Those who favor “universal” background checks on gun buyers make some ridiculous arguments. For example, opponents correctly point out that gun buyers with criminal intent will always find channels that require no background check. Gunrunning is among the oldest professions, and the black market will always be with us. Thus the promise of universal background checks — even if that were a legitimate government activity — is a fraud, because universality can’t possibly be achieved. Supporters, however, challenge this argument by contending that it proves too much: If requiring background checks is futile as a crime-fighting measure, they ask, why should we have laws against murder, rape, battery, and robbery? Those laws will never stop everyone from committing a crime, so what’s the point?

This would catch the eye of almost anyone skimming the paper. As someone who consults to hotels and to human-resource professionals on almost a daily basis, I found the article riveting. So did countless others. The news report went viral and was carried in a number of publications late last month. To summarize, two hotels are being sued in Maricopa County Superior Court for allegedly failing to conduct criminal background checks for the same nightshift front-desk clerk who had worked at both hotels at different times during 2011 and in 2012 and allegedly raped two women in separate attacks. In both instances, the clerk used a master key to enter the rooms late at night. In one instance, he was caught on the hotel’s video camera opening the door with the key.

The ongoing case of Imran Awan, the trusted insider who used his access to the U.S. Congress to allegedly steal equipment and conduct bank fraud, continues to make news. Two topics caused this curious case of the IT service provider and his unfettered access to the email servers of members of the House of Representatives to break through the normal Washington, D.C., noise. The first was the rather loud and all-encompassing civil case filed in October 2017 by George Webb Sweigert (1:17-cv-02223-RC), which is a class-action lawsuit against the Democratic National Committee and others. Among those others is Imran Awan. The defendants have been making their case to be excluded from the class-action lawsuit. However, to date, I see no evidence that Awan has filed paper to be excluded.
