PSHE

At Ore Village Primary Academy, Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become confident, happy and empathic adults; able to pursue their aspirations now and in the future and flourish into the very best versions of themselves. We provide every child with opportunities to fully engage and learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of the diverse society in which we live, and to respect others as equals. PSHE is taught across the school from Nursery – Year 6 on a weekly basis and as a school we follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme. Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing physical and mental health, in turn supporting emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

Through the PSHE curriculum we recognise our duty to ‘expand minds’ and provide opportunities for children to understand the fundamental British Values.

Relationship and Sex education (RSE) is firmly embedded in our Jigsaw curriculum, which empowers every pupil to be safe and safeguarded.

Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our CARE values; co-operation, achievement, respect and empathy. Helping our pupils to understand their own personal value, and how as individuals, they fit into and contribute to our world.

Jigsaw Charter

Every class uses the Jigsaw Charter. The charter is a set of rules that the children follow during these lessons, and encourages the use of positive language, respect for others and the right to pass.

British Values

Fundamental British Values are taught throughout every Puzzle Piece each term. Our open discussions and independent learning allow children the chance to explore these values.

Termly Focus

Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (Puzzles), each containing six lessons (Pieces) covering each academic year.

Throughout every year group, at the beginning of each lesson (Piece) there is a Calm Me time, which is designed to teach children techniques to relax their bodies and calm their minds. This is being used to great effect and impacting positively on children’s ability to concentrate, to connect well with each other and most importantly to be more aware of and better able to manage their feelings and thought processes.

We start every lesson with a ‘Connect us’ game which helps us build better relationships, practise working together successfully and improving our communication skills.

These are short, enjoyable activities that bring the pupils together and are differentiated in each year group.

Our Jigsaw lessons are taught weekly by the class teacher. One reason we have chosen Jigsaw is because it is very discussion based and gives all our pupils the opportunity  to share their thoughts and opinions in a safe and respectful environment. Every pupil has their own Jigsaw journal which they use to record their thoughts from our lessons. Every year group from Nursery - Year 6 will be teaching Jigsaw and building on their knowledge each year. As a school, each year group will focus on the same Puzzle Piece and this will be introduced through a whole school assembly at the beginning of each term.
