Welcome to Shark Class,


Our class motto is “Sharks, always moving forward”


Did you know that sharks cannot swim backwards and consequently everyone in Shark class is constantly moving forward. We are proud of each others achievements and relish a challenge. We love belonging to this shiver of sharks !

Term 4 - What Makes us Human

Difference. Humanity. Human rights.

Year 5 and 6 will be investigating CRIME AND PUNISHMENT. They will start the topic by looking at crime and punishment since Roman times. They’ll move to thinking about how some crimes are consistent through the ages and some are dependent on societal beliefs about right and wrong. They will then focus on Sir Robert Peel and his drive for a professional police force in the Victorian era and how that influenced policing across the globe today.

Term 1 - Digging up the past

Racism. Childhood. Identity

Welcome to the start of a new school year and term 1 in Year 5 and 6. This term Year 5 and 6 are focused on ‘Digging up the past’ through this we will be becoming historians. We will also be thinking about concepts of Racism, Identity and Childhood. What do you think those words mean?

We’ll be learning all about the Tudors. We’ll start be placing The Tudors on a historical timeline. We will learn all about the Tudor dynasty. We'll investigate the reason for priest holes in large houses. We will find out about Henry VIII, his wives and the lives of black people in his court. We will move to discover the impact of Henry VIII's decisions on his own children. The end of the topic will see us answering the question 'How has the Tudor Dynasty impacted on our lives today?'

Term 6 - On Our Doorstep

Beauty. Reality. Equality

Welcome to term 6. This term Year 5 and 6 are focused on ‘On our doorstep’ and considering the concepts of beauty, equality and reality. What do you think those words mean?


Over the term we will become Geographers with a focus on Human Geography. We’ll start by looking at the term ‘Migration’. We’ll be finding out about where we and our ancestors come from by chatting to our families. We’ll be looking at these places on maps. We’ll then turn our attention to why people have migrated to Hastings in the past. Did you know there are signs of Romans and Normans in Hastings? We’ll then find out about Refugees and where they come from and why they travel such huge distances. We’ll end the term by finding out how the kind people of Hastings welcome and support Refugees in our community.

Term 5 - Our Planet and Us

Environment. Responsibility. Tolerance.

Welcome to term 5. This term Year 5 and 6 are focused on ‘Our Planet and Us’ and considering the concepts of responsibility, environment and tolerance. What do you think those words mean?


Over the term we will become Geographers. We’ll be looking at Deserts. We’ll be finding out what classifies as a Desert, and where Deserts are on our beautiful planet. We’ll then be discovering the Desert on our doorstep. Our investigations will move to looking at how plants and animals are adapted to Desert environments. At the end of the term, we’ll look at how an area of our Earth, the size of Ireland, becomes Desert every year and how we can as a human race prevent that from happening and how we can adapt to living in such inhospitable environments.

Term 4 - What Makes us Human

Difference. Humanity. Human rights.

In Term 4 the school will be thinking about ‘What makes us human?’. Through this theme we will be exploring the concepts of difference, humanity, human rights and art. We will be studying Apartheid. We will start our journey by finding out about the country of South Africa, it’s geographical location and a little of its history. We’ll move on to exploring what Apartheid meant for the black people living in South Africa. As our understanding of racism and segregation develops we’ll find out about the ways members of the United African Congress fought back and how one man was pivotal in ensuring change. We’ll find out about the life of this man - Nelson Mandela. At the end of the topic we will discuss the deep question ‘Was Nelson Mandela a freedom fighter or a terrorist?’

Term 3 - Events in History

Life. Death. Truth. Fairness.

Term 3 has us considering ‘Events in History’ and thinking about the key concepts of truth, fairness and life/death. In Year 5 and 6 we will be exploring the Space Race. We will be learning about the events that led to us landing on the moon in 1969. We’ll explore the role of animals in early space exploration and discussing whether the use of these animals was justified to make the technological advancements we did. We’ll then investigate the geopolitical landscape at the time and find out about the cold war between the Soviet Union and the United States of America and how the Space Race was a race to put the first man on the moon. We’ll finish the topic by asking the question ‘Who really won the Space Race?’

Term 2 - World Around Us

Survival. Nature. Knowledge.

It’s term 2 and this term we will be thinking about ‘The World Around Us’. Underpinning our learning will be the concepts of survival, nature and knowledge, what do you think these words mean? Our focus will be on ‘Floodlands’ and we will be becoming Geographers. We’ll study world maps to discover what areas of the world are being affected by rising sea levels. We’ll find out about the area on our doorstep where rising sea levels are eroding the cliff base. We’ll investigate the cause of rising sea levels and find out how communities around the world are adapting or preventing. At the end of the term we will be answering the question ‘What is the difference between surviving and thriving?’

Identity and Childhood. What do you think those words mean? We’ll be learning all about the Ancient Greeks. We’ll start be placing Greece on a world map and placing it on a historical timeline. We’ll be learning all about their belief systems and why stories were so important to them. We’ll be looking at images of Greek artefacts and making deductions. We’ll think about the lives of ordinary Greek people and finish the unit by finding out about the most famous of the Greek Philosophers and answering the question ‘How do the ideas of these great thinkers influence our lives today?’
