Goldeneye

Bucephala clangula

This medium sized duck is a scarce winter visitor here, the majority of records being individuals present for a day or two. Until the 1980's they were considered annual, but in line with global trends they have become less frequent in recent years.

They nest in holes in trees and have a spectacular courtship display - the loud double whistle can be heard more than a kilometre away.

Number in Britain: 200 females (Summer)

Status:

in London: common winter visitor, occasional summer record.

in UK: Resident breeder, Passage/winter visitor

Habitat: Lakes, rivers, also seacoasts on migration

Diet: Insects, molluscs and crustaceans, mainly by diving.
