Green Sandpiper

Tringa ochropus

Until recently (2009) one or two over-wintered annually here, often by the West reservoir. However in line with national trends they have become scarcer. Most years they are seen here on passage in low numbers.

Only one or two pairs breed in Britain each year (RSPB). The brown or purple spotted eggs are frequently laid in old crow nests or abandoned squirrel dreys.

Number in Britain: 100-1,000/year

Status:

in London: winter visitor and passage migrant (mainly in autumn).

in UK: Scarce breeder, Passage/winter visitor

Habitat: Pools & marsh, on migration wet grass & mudflats.

Diet: Invertebrates, mostly from near surface, rarely probes.
