Three were seen by R. D. Calbrade on the 12th of February during the bitterly cold winter of 1955-56.

Number in Britain: 7000 birds (Winter)

in London: scarce migrant, usually in autumn, and winter visitor.

in UK: Winter migrant

Habitat: Lakes, ponds & rivers, & estuaries on migration

Diet: Plant material (e.g. tubers, shoots, leaves) in water or flooded pasture
