Melanitta nigra

Rare here, two females were present on the East reservoir (now Woodberry Wetlands) throughout the day on 21st of October 2009 and showed well to several observers.

Number in Britain: 100,000 birds (Winter)

Status:

in London: passage migrant and occasional winter visitor, never numerous.

in UK: Migrant breeder, Passage/Winter visitor.

Habitat: Tundra lakes, on migration rivers, lakes & coasts

Diet: Mostly molluscs, also insects, fish eggs in freshwater habitats
