Color For Life

Cephalopods can have beautiful colored skin. Cells called chromatophores, which are located right under the skin, produce vibrant color patterns. Each cell is made of a pocket-sized sac containing color. When the muscles contract they expand the sac and expose the color. When the muscles relax the chromatophores close diminishing the color. The colored skin of this amazing sea creature is not just for beauty because the chromatophores can change color almost immediately allowing a cephalopod to blend in with its surroundings. These cells although small are an amazing help to any creature of the cephalopod family.
