Thomas Hindman Orphans
The following information was gleaned from Orphan Court information found in an issue of "Our Family Tree" (a Pennsylvania genealogy paper). My notes are included in italics.
INDIANA COUNTY, Pennsylvania
ORPHANS’ COURT DOCKET, NUMBER ONE
At an Orphans’ Court held in Indiana for the County of Indiana in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania the second Monday of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seven. Present the Honorable John Young, Esq., Resident, and his associate Justices of said county.
2nd Monday, June 1807
HINDMAN, THOMAS - Petition of Samuel Hindman, son of Thomas, late of Conemaugh Township, above age of 14, asks that William Crawford be appointed his guardian.
At the time of Thomas’ death (abt 1805), the children’s ages (with first wife Mary McMasters) were (oldest to youngest)…
Janet/Jane b. 1788 : 17
Elizabeth b. 1789 : 16
David b. 1790 : 15
Nancy/Agnes b.1793 : 12
Samuel b. 1796 : 9
John b.1796 : 9
Susannah b 1798 : 7
The following children were from Thomas’ second marriage to Catherine McKee:
Mary b. 1801 : 4
Rebecca b. 1802 : 3
Anne b. 1804 : 1
This first orphan court (even though their mother was still alive), was held 2 years after his death. However, Samuel is noted above as above 14, but seemingly was only about 11 by my calculation. I’m guessing Thomas died closer to 1807 than 1805.
Not sure who guardian William Crawford is. Perhaps a relative?
2nd Monday – June 1808
HINDMAN, THOMAS – Petition of Wm. Fiscus intermarried, with Nancy Hindman, dau. and co-heir of Thos. Hindman, late of Conemaugh twp., who died leaving a widow, to-wit Catherine (who has since married John Wilson) and 10 children, to-wit Nancy, Jane, Elizabeth, David, Samuel, John, Susannah, Margaret, Rebecca and. Ann, the last nine still in minority. Had 177 A., 91-1/2 perches 1and bounded by Robert Robison, Joseph Wray and. the Kiskiminetas River, in Conemaugh twp. The sheriff, Thos. McCartney, “with twelve good men and true” from his bailiwick found the property could not be divided among the parties without spoiling the whole and. appraised same for $970.50. The twelve men with the sheriff were:
Joseph Wray Robert Wilson John McKee
Abraham Fiscus John. Henderson Samuel Marshall
David Shields John Barr William Marshall
Robert Robison William Newele Thomas Elder
By 1808, Thomas’ wife Catherine had remarried John Wilson. Seems that the sheriff and “12 good men” determined that Catherine had to sell the land. I wonder who got to buy it?
2nd Monday of June 1819
HINDMAN, Thos., Rebecca, one of ch., over 14, has John McKee appt. gdn. 15 June 1819.
By 1819, Rebecca would have been about 15. John McKee is an uncle to Rebecca. My notes state that John was married to Martha Hindman, sister to Thomas Hindman. And considering that Catherine was a McKee… perhaps a sister to John.
4th Monday of March 1820
HINDMAN. Thos. Jacob Frick, Conemaugh. Twp., states Hindman owned 177 acres, Conemaugh Twp., adj. Jos. Rea & John Robison. Left a wid., Catherine and 10
ch., viz, Agnes, md. Wm. Fisher; Jane, md. Jos. Manners; Eliz., David.,Sam’l, John, Susannah, Mary, Rebecca & Ann, all of full age except Mary, Rebecca & Ann.
INDIANA COUNTY, Pennsylvania

The jury was: James Elliott, Jr., sheriff; John Coleman, James Coleman, James Nowrey, Robt. Wilson, Alex’r. Templeton, Thos. Shirley, Robt. Robison, Robt. Robison, Jr., John Getty, Jas. 4th Monday in December 1820
HINDMAN, Thos. Ann, minor dau. over 14, has John McKee appt. gdn.
Thomas’ youngest daughter is also adopted by John and Martha McKee (Ann’s uncle and aunt). It is nice that the youngest two daughters got to stay together.
