Evan Hindman Family History

Rushville Hospital 1956 - 57

Early photos of my father Vernon, my older sister Elin and me (!) as a baby. Photos taken 1956 (probably in the little house).

Evan Hindman (Me!), son of Vernon and Eleonora Hindman , was born October, 1956 in the Rushville, Nebraska Community Hospital. Naturally, I was a cute and adorable baby.

Home Sweet Home

My family initially lived in the little house at the end of the lane that was built by my father and his father in 1952. My parents (married 1952) lived in this house and raised their two small children until moving to the current farm in 1958. The house was just 18' x 18', with a basement. We had a chemical toilet in the basement, but generally, the outhouse was used most of the warmer months. That is me, above, sleeping in the highchair in the little house. And, yes, we got our water from the pump!

For my first couple years, our family (including my sister, Elin) lived in the small house at the end of the lane on my grandparent's farm (Claude and Elsa Hindman ) northeast of Hay Springs. In September of 1958 (I was almost 2), we moved onto the farm that my mom inherited from Mrs. Ida Holtzberger. (Interesting note: My mom was born and raised on that farm until my Grandfather Rasmussen lost the place in the 1940s). The house had been empty for a few years and needed a little "fixing up". My room was upstairs and it would get freezing cold during the sub-zero winters of the northern Nebraska panhandle. How cold was it? Water would freeze in a glass overnight if left on the bedstand. It was a few years before we put a bathroom in the house, so I can remember the trips to the outhouse to "take care of business". Over the years, we continued to fix and update the house (converted a pantry into a bathroom around 1961, added a large porch in 1968, added much needed insulation over the years, etc.).

School pictures over the years...

Starts with my kindergarten photo and ends with my high school graduation photo. Yes, I had 70s hair... It was the 70s after all.

My formative school years were spent in Rushville's Cravath Elementary School and the Rushville High School (see the Rushville page for pictures of the schools). I was a good student and almost always stayed out of trouble.

For a few laughs, check out the class pictures (future class of 1975) for grades kindergarten through 8th grade. We were so young!

Photo taken 1975, just before leaving for college. I bought a 1967 Mustang in that summer and my sister had a 1968 Mustang. Weren't we cool?

I graduated from high school in 1975 and went to college at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. At the "U", I majored in Electrical Engineering and enjoyed campus life in Lincoln. Having been an avid Cornhusker fan growing up, I truly enjoyed attending the football games at Memorial Stadium.

When I graduated from Nebraska in 1979, I took a job at Boeing in Wichita, Kansas. While living in Wichita, I met Sharon (she lived in the same apartment building). We were married in 1983 (yes, I married the girl next door) and moved to a nice house in southeast Wichita. We lived there for 7 years and enjoyed living in Kansas.

In 1990, we moved to Iowa and started our family.
