Extracts from the
Waxham & Happing Rural Deanery Magazine 1893 to 1954
The Waxham & Happing Rural Deanery Magazine started in 1893, as a way of binding together the Deanery. In its first edition the Rural Dean, Reverend A. P. Brown writes “Our Rural Deanery is a division of the diocese of Norwich, and we none of us live very far from each other. We are therefore glad to hear more about each other, and the way the neighbouring parishes are getting on”.
St. Mary’s entries were submitted by each succeeding vicar, until the magazine was replaced in the 1960s by individual village magazines. Efforts have been made to access as many of the magazines as possible, and the Hickling entries of the magazine have been transcribed by Helen Cornwell and published in three volumes. For ease of viewing and searching, we have combined the three volumes into one.
The Hickling Extracts contain much fascinating information, and include baptisms, churchings, marriages and burials, together with some wonderful obituaries and insights into daily village life over the years they span. They have already been a great help to family history researchers, and provide not only useful information, but a journey back in time (355 pages of Hickling village history) for those with time to just sit and browse.
You will notice that although the title of this series is dated 1893 to 1954, we are only able to show you the copies to which we have had access. There are some small gaps in our publication, but if more editions can be found, the transcripts will be added to those here. Should you have any of the magazines, we would be most grateful if we could be allowed to transcribe the Hickling entries from them so that we can provide as complete a set as possible.
