By Waldo Beales

This book, published in 2006 by the Hickling Local History Group, was originally hand-written by its author, Waldo Beales, in his retirement, having at last the time to look back and reflect on his experiences in the early and middle years of the last century.

It is the story of a Hickling man’s time in the First World War with the Norfolk Regiment, his transport to France in 1915; his daily life in the trenches; his mates; his episode in the Field Hospital with Scarlet Fever; his wounding, eventual repatriation and discharge from the army, culminating in his return to his family and to civilian life here in Hickling.

Waldo sadly died in1985, but left these enduring memories for his family. We are most grateful to his daughter, Pat, for her permission to share them here with you.

Copies may still be available.
