Search this Site: Information / Instructions

In 2021, in an update to how Google Sites operates, Google (our host) has significantly changed the search facility.

All the pages shown on and accessible from the Navigation Sidebar (Left) are searchable and you may wish to use the "Search this site" facility (magnifying glass, top right) to search for a particular word within these pages.

Most of these pages contain links to documents. Whilst all the documents uploaded to this site have been created as searchable PDF documents, unfortunately, the new “Google Sites” has not re-created the old site’s facility to search within those documents directly.

Therefore, if you wish to search for something in an individual document, you will need to download that document. Most PDF readers / editors provide excellent search facilities, and searching for a particular word or name is very effective within these facilities. Additional information and links to two free PDF readers are shown on this page though you may already have one loaded to your device.

If Google decides to re-instate the more comprehensive search facility, be assured that we will update the site to reflect this.

Information for those who are new to using "PDF" documents:

PDF means Portable Document Format, and is extensively used commercially to ensure that documents and images can be opened by anyone. To this end, many PC manufacturers include a "PDF Reader" as standard in the software they load on new machines. These Readers are many and various, but common ones include "Adobe Reader" and "Foxit Reader". If, in the unlikely event that you are unable to open one of the files here at Hickling History, you will need to download and install one of these free "Readers".

Searching Individual Documents:

How to carry out a "Basic" search using a PDF Reader:

Enter the name etc. in the FIND search box and press enter or click on the (right facing) next arrow. Each time you click on this arrow, it will take you to the next instance of that name in the document.

How to carry out a "Full" search using "Foxit Reader" or "Adobe Reader":

A much better way of searching inside a document: Click on the small down triangle alongside the word FIND in the search box and select "Open a Full Search"; this opens a panel alongside the document. Enter the name in the "search for" box and click on search. This panel will then locate every instance of that word in the current document and show you a brief "overview" of the surrounding text. This makes searching much quicker, and by just left-clicking on the part you wish to see, you will automatically jump straight to that section of the document. Try it, it's really quick and very easy!

We personally favour "Foxit Reader". It's a much smaller download than Adobe and is both very quick to load and extremely easy to use. I have included a link to "Foxit Reader" below, and as I say, it's Free to download and use.
