Tasks
Task 1 Getting to know each other. Click here and read about professor Isaias Carvalho.
Note: Always bring a dictionary to class.

Task 3 Needs analysis. What's your English proficiency level?
Task 4 Useful Classroom Expressions. Click here.
Task 5 Reading. "Five events that shaped the history of English". Answer the questions posed by your professor.
Task 6 Open the attached file named 1000 Most Common Words in English. Check the words you do not know yet. Look them up in an English-English dictionary (see the Useful Links on the right). Make sentences with at least 10 of them (if you fit in that number).
Task 7 Go to False Cognates. Pick out the 10 items which are the most meaningful to you on the list provided (English-Portugues; Portuguese-English). Also, translate the text A day at work, which is at the bottom of the page.
Task 8 Go to Quizzes. Do Quiz 9.
Task 9 Suffixes and prefixes. Click here and check the most common prefixes and suffixes in English. Study them. Find as many words as possible which contain some of these prefixes and suffixes in the text in Task 5 (above).
Task 10 Go to Quizzes. Do Quiz 17.
Task 11 Writing. Click here. Follow the instructions to write a short one-paragraph essay about yourself.
Task 12 Go to Quizzes. Do Quiz 5 & Quiz 6. Prepositions of time in - on - at
Task 13 Song. Ma Baker (Boney M). Anwer the questions on the sheet that has been handed out by your professor.
Task 14 Reading. "Changing the teaching of history, One byte at a time". Click here and read the text, based on which your task is to comment on the teaching of history and the internet.
Task 15 Go to Algumas expressões português-inglês. Study and learn some linking words and expressions which are common in everyday language. Highlight the 3 you find the most useful.
Task 16 Go to Quizzes. Do Quiz 8.
Task 17 Practice the text produced in task 11 for a basic oral presentation.
Task 18 Song competition. Listen to "Imagine", by John Lennon. Sing along. Be ready to participate in a fun competition in class.
Task 19 Go to An English Dialect. Have some fun while practicing your pronunciation in English in a kind of twisted way.
