The next General Meeting of the Sunsites Gem & Mineral Club will be on Monday November 12th at 7:00 PM at the Sunsites Community Center. We will be watching a video on the Identification of Minerals. It will also be the meeting for the Election of Officers for 2013.

Pearce Days:

The Club has again been asked to set up a display in the old Captain's Store in Pearce for the Pearce Days celebration. The dates this year are November 23 and 24 or the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. We will be setting up the displays on Wednesday, November 21, the day before Thanksgiving. This year we are asking members to bring their own special rocks for the display. Members can bring rocks to the store in Pearce on Wednesday morning between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Please make a label with the identity of the rock and the name of its owner. The Club display has been very well received in past years. Most visitors are amazed at the rocks and minerals that are found in our area.

Meet the Clubs:

Thanks to Larry Stout for representing us at “Meet the Clubs” at the Community Center. It is a good way for people in the Sunsites area to learn what activities are available. Thanks, Larry!

Minutes from General Meeting, October 8, 2012:

The general meeting of the Sunsites Gem & Mineral Club was delayed until after the speaker gave his presentation.

Geoff Oldfather, Communications and Public Relations Manager for Arizona's G & T Cooperatives which operates Apache Generating Station spoke about the proposed EPA changes to the facility.

Intermission and raffle tickets followed.

President Diane Dunn opened the meeting which began at 8:20 PM.

Minutes, September 10, 2012: The minutes from the previous month were approved as published in the newsletter with no changes or corrections being made.

Treasurers Report: Walter Sigel stated that there were no changes and that the balance remains at $6,429.17

Hospitality: Cherie Robb will be returning from California to resume the Hospitality position. Jim Robb continued to do a great job in her absence making coffee and bringing beverages. Refreshments for this evening were provided by Bette Greene and Elliot Hendricks. Thank You to both!

Nominating Committee Report: Consisting of Bette Greene and Carl Schnabel, the committee has contacted several members and will present the 2013 slate for new officers at the November meeting.

Old Business: President Diane Dunn recapped the on-going discussion about repairs to the lapidary facility which was approved by the Board of Directors. Approximately $500.00 would be needed to bring the shop up to date. Carl Schnabel made a motion to the Membership that the repairs be approved. With a unanimous yea vote from the membership with 1/3rd of the members attending, the motion to amend the budget was passed.

As there were no further items at hand, the meeting was adjourned.

Notes: 1) A round of applause was given to both, Wally Hozjan and Zoe Schnabel for their continuing progress on their health issues. 2) If anyone knows of interesting public speakers, please contact Don Hammer.

Respectfully submitted,

Zoe Schnabel, Secretary October 14, 2012

Field Trips:

October Field Trip

On Saturday, October 20th we went to Greaterville, AZ as gold seekers. Ann Wildauer, one of our members, is a partner in a claim at the area. We met up with some members of the Desert Gold Diggers at their claim. Jim Robb and Henri set up a dry panning machine. The giant nugget remained elusive, but some members got to bring home a few flakes. It was a beautiful day in a lovely area.

November Field Trip

We have permission to go to Commonwealth Mine in Pearce to look for amethyst on November 17th. We will meet at 8:30 AM the parking area in Pearce, leaving at 8:45. We will need high clearance vehicles to reach the area. Heavy digging and rock breaking tools are needed to get into the amethyst . There are always smaller pieces for gathering.

If anyone has ideas for future trips, please contact either Diane or Henri Van den Bos.

Club Website

The address of the Club Website is on the masthead of this newsletter. The Website has past newsletters, photos from almost all of our field trips and other Club information.

Club Dues

Club Dues are due for 2013. Walter will be collecting them at the meeting.

Lapidary and Silversmith Classes

The Lapidary Lab is still closed. Plans are being made to make the necessary repairs to the equipment. With the approval of the budget change, we will soon begin making repairs to the lapidary equipment.
